Fence Post By The Dozen

It all began on Friday, June 26th, when
we found the red trailer waiting for us
with 90 eight-foot long fence posts.
These posts along with some high-tensile
wire were soon to become our new best
friends. Stakes were placed in the ground
to guide the diggers. The tractor was
fired up with the auger bit attached and
the work began. The guys thought it
would be a good idea to take our shirts off since it was hot. We did not, however take into account the fact that none of us had brought out the sunscreen and by lunch most of the boys were red as beets. The second day we divided into teams to see who could get the most fence posts set in the least amount of time. With the combined effort, by lunch we had set the same number of posts in the ground that took us the entire day to do the first day.

Fencing is not hard if you know
what you’re doing. It does take a lot of
work, but you learn something new
everyday. I have never done anything
like this before, but now I know how to
do something constructive with my hands.
As I dug holes, I learned to read a tape
measure. A few basic things to remember
when you build a fence are;
1. Be sure you wear gloves because the poles may have toxic chemicals on them.
2. Be sure to place the pole 36” in the ground so it won’t pop out when you put the wire on it.
3. Wear a hat! If you don’t wear a hat you could have a heat stroke, and we don’t want that!
